Before that he had thought of another way of proving his theory, and with the help of his electrical kite had drawn lightning from a cloud. The episode of the kite, so firm and fixed in legend, turns out to be dim and mystifying in fact. Franklin himself never wrote the story of the most dramatic of his experiments. All that is known about what he did on that famous day, of no known date, comes from Joseph Priestley's account, published fifteen years afterwards but read in manuscript by Franklin, who must have given Priestley the precise, familiar details."As every circumstance relating to so capital a discovery (the greatest, perhaps, since the time of Sir Isaac Newton) cannot but give pleasure to all my readers, I shall endeavour to gratify them with the communication of a few particulars which I have from the best authority."The Doctor, having published his method of verifying his hypothesis concerning the sameness of electricity with the matter of lightning, was waiting for the erection of a spire [on Christ Church] in Philadelphia to carry his views into execution; not imagining that a pointed rod of a moderate height could answer the purpose; when it occurred to him that by means of a common kite he could have better access to the regions of thunder than by any spire whatever. Preparing, therefore, a large silk handkerchief and two cross-sticks of a proper length on which to extend it, he took the opportunity of the first approaching thunderstorm to take a walk in the fields, in which there was a shed convenient for his purpose. But, dreading the ridicule which too commonly attends unsuccessful attempts in science, he communicated his intended experiment to nobody but his son" — then twenty-one, not a child as in the traditional illustrations of the scene — "who assisted him in raising the . Mus. of Art"Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky" by Benjamin West (1738-1820). Click pic to enlarge."The kite being raised, a considerable time elapsed before there was any appearance of its being electrified. One very promising cloud had passed over it without any effect; when, at length, just as he was beginning to despair of his contrivance, he observed some loose threads of the hempen string to stand erect, and to avoid one another, just as if they had been suspended on a common conductor. Struck with this promising appearance, he immediately presented his knuckle to the key, and (let the reader judge of the exquisite pleasure he must have felt at that moment) the discovery was complete. He perceived a very evident electric spark. Others succeeded, even before the string was wet, so as to put the matter past all dispute, and when the rain had wet the string he collected electric fire very copiously. This happened in June 1752, a month after the electricians in France had verified the same theory, but before he heard of anything they had done."

T: Yes. It brings ’s the fun part. What about more than fun?
S12: more than fun meanstheme parks are more interesting than other parks.
T: Yes, it is moreinteresting. Anything else? No? Ok, thank you. Sit down, please. He mentionedit has a lot of fun. Yeas, it is. Aboutmore than fun, we can agree with Shuman’s idea. Theme parks provide us a lotinformation. For example, Dollyhood, what can we learn from it?
Ss: American culture.
T: Yes. What about Camelot?
Ss:Englandhistory.
T: Yes.
(6mins)
①. Is it always fun and more than fun in the theme park?
②. Did you have any unhappy experiences in the theme park?
Orhave you heard about any unhappy experiences in the theme park?
T: Exactly. Besides those exciting rides, we can also learn a lot ofthings in the theme parks. But is it always fun and more than fun in the themepark? Did you have any unhappy experiences in the theme park? Or have you heardabout any unhappy experiences in the theme park? You just mentioned you went toDisney Land. Anything unsatisfied?
S12: At noon, we all went to restaurant. It was expensive. It was bad.
T: So you were not satisfiedwith the food.
T: Actually you are not alone. Now let’s read A Bad Day at Magic Land and find out three things that ruined thewriter’s theme park trip.
S13: First, he threw up. Itwas embarrassed. Second, his food was ruined. Third, his glasses fell in thewater.
T: Yes, the reasons are that he went on too many roller coasters and had an expensive and terrible ’s worse, his glasses fell into thewater. We don’t want such a trip. Of course, we want fun and more than fun. Howto avoid all these things? Can we try all the rides?
Ss: No.
T: We don’t have the time aswell as the energy. So we need to ?
Ss:Plan?
T: Yes. We need to choosewhat’s our favorite, for example. What about food? It is always expensive in atheme park or any destination?
Ss: Sandwich?
T: Good idea. Maybe we canhave some homemade food. What about glasses? Besides glasses, what is easilylost?
Ss: watch, purse, phone…
T: Yes. To prevent it fromhappening, we should take care of our personal things.
T: Indeed, a good plan is necessary. And let’s makeone. Suppose you are going to one of the three theme parks in our text, use theform in your handout to make a simple trip plan. Every four of you pick onetheme park from our text. And each one has his or her responsibility. One makessuggestion about morning activity; one noon activity; one afternoon activity;and the last one is the presenter. The presenter should be clear and loud, haveenough eye contact and of course show a well-organized plan. Clear?
Step 3 Post-reading(5 mins)
T: Everyone, it is time to present. Do rememberpresenter needs to pay attention to all the three things. And the listenersneed to pay attention and evaluate.
S14: I would like to share my plan with you. From myperspective, besides a well-organized plan, some preparations are of greatsignificance. For example we may need to take an umbrella in case of badweather and some pills in case of emergency. And our group divided our planinto three parts: morning visit, noon visit and the afternoon visit. In the morning,we can see carpenters and other craftsmen make their work in the old fashionway, I think that would be great fun. In the noon, we can have a lunch whileenjoying the country music performed in the outdoor theatre. After lunch, wecan visit candy store and try the same candy made 150 years ago. Afternoon, wecan take a ride on the only steam engine train and even see some bald ’s all. I think we can enjoy our one-day trip in Dollywood. Thank you.
T: That’s a wonderful plan. Clear and loud, fivestars. Well-organized, six stars maybe. But we only have five. About eyecontact, next time, you need to take some simple notes. Then you don’t need toturn over again and again. So I will you give you four stars. What about yourevaluation? What do you think of her presentation? Do you like it? Yes, ok justmake your evaluation on your handout. Now, What about next group?
S15: Well, what about my plan. Before I go to Camelot,I will search the internet gaining information about English culture. In themorning, I go there, waiting outside the gate. I will be very excited; I willsee some fake royal members, like King Edward and the knights of round the lunch, I will go the farm and of course I will feed the animals, maybe very exciting and interesting. And then jousting. After dinner, I will gofor the sightseeing. The night will be very intriguing. Of course I will buysome souvenirs. Take pictures, enjoy the beautiful things. Ok, thank you.
T: Charming accent, right. Well, it is your group’strip plan. So maybe next time you should present: “our group is going to do sth”,that will be much better. Well, I would to see every group’s plan, so pleaseturn it into a piece of writing. And see you next time. Thank you.
Step 4 Homework(1 min)

The Shoe Tacks
The hardworking black *** ith Jones used to work all day in his shop and so hard working was he that at times he would make the sparks fly from his hammer.
The son of Mr. Smith, a rich neighbor, used to e to see the black *** ith everyday and for hours and hours he would enjoy himself watching how the trade *** an worked.
"Young man, why don't you try your hand to learn to make shoe tacks, even if it is only to pass the time?" said the black *** ith. "Who knows, one day, it may be of use to you."
The lazy boy began to see what he could do. But after a little practice he found that he was being very skilled and soon he was making some of the finest tacks.
Old Mr. Smith died and the son on account of the war lost all his goods. He had to leave home and was forced to take up residence in another country. It so happened that in this village there were numerous shoemakers who were spending a lot of money to buy tacks for their shoes and even at times when they paid high prices they were not always able to get what they wanted, because in that part of the country there was a high demand for soldiers' shoes.
Our young Mr. Smith, who was finding it difficult to earn his daily bread, remembered that once upon a time he had
learned the art of making tacks and had the sudden idea of making a bargain with the shoemakers. He told them that he would make the tacks if they would help to get him settled in his workshop. The shoemakers were only too glad of the offer. And after a while, Mr. Smith found that he was soon making the finest tacks in the village.
"How funny it seems," he used to say, "even making tacks can bring a fortune. My trade is more useful to me than were all my former riches."

The Most Beautiful Flower
The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read Beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree. Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown, For the world was intent on dragging me down.
And if that weren't enough to ruin my day, A young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted down And said with great excitement, "Look what I found!"
In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, With its petals all worn - not enough rain, or too little light. Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play, I faked a *** all *** ile and then shifted away.
But instead of retreating he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with surprise, "It sure *** ells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here, it's for you."
The weed before me was dying or dead. Not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need."
But instead of him placing the flower in my hand, He held it mid-air without reason or plan. It was then that I noticed for the very first time, that weed-toting boy could not see: he was blind.
I heard my voice quiver, tears shone like the sun. As I thanked him for picking the very best one. "You're wele," he *** iled, and then ran off to play, Unaware of the impact he'd had on my day.
I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged plight? Perhaps from his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight.
Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see, the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. And for all of those times I myself had been blind, I vowed to see beauty,Then I held that wilted flower up to my nose and breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose And *** iled as that young boy, another weed in his hand About to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.

Nail in the Fence
There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there."

Helping the Remote Village
A year ago, the famous astronaut received an invitation by airmail from a remote village. Intending to sniff some fresh air, he and his interpreter paid a fortnight visit there. It was a privilege for them to be there, but they were shocked by what they saw. The tracks were muddy. The river was drying up. Most villagers only possessed onebroom, a few tins and several jars and their rectangular grass huts with round angles were surrounded by weeds. Besides, their school had no roof and platform, and the students had no concept of clicking a computer at all. They were badly in need.
Soon, the astronaut made a generous voluntary donation to the village. There were textbooks for students, sewing machines for tailors and tractors for farmers. His distribution catalogue also included operating a clinic and a trunklibrary, as well as giving weekly lessons to teach relevant farming knowledge like how to dry out seeds or raise oxen. He himself not only helped do some paperwork but also purchased grills for boys to toast potatoes and combs for girls who were dying to get one. The other day, he heard from the villagers again inviting him to participate in the donationanniversary. For political and security reasons, he couldn’t adjust his outgoing arrangement-otherwise he would go. But his deeds were remembered forever.

Immigrate to America
Attracted by the boom in America, my nephew teamed up with a Korean to illegally cross the Bearing Strait in theArctic to America. To avoid the Customs’ punishment, they hid in a small ferry called the North Pole Seagull, sitting back to back without sleeping, showering and shaving for 3 days, and had no chance to mourn their lost luggage when landing. The hardship of this crossingwas apparent.
At first, he made a living by means of raising cattle and then was hired in aircraft industries. He lived in a Catholic district. Taking ina small percentage of Pakistani immigrants, the majority of the residents were from Italy and Denmark, who all kept up their customs and cultures. Different blocks here were distinctly marked out and indicated from the racial angle. It was unfair and needed reforming. But with nowhere else to go, my nephew lived on and managed to make a life for himself.
My nephew’s fortune came when he bravely helped a conductor brake a ream to stop it from slipping out of the rails. The man waselected vice chairman of the Socialist Party later. It occurred to my nephew that he could grasp this opportunity to ask for his help. The man who was thankful helped him apply to the civil authority for the right to live in America by inserting his brave deed into his documents. Unlike a great many other applicants, his application was approved by the Federal Justice Ministry. Before long, he started his own bakery and lived a better life.

A Sly Murder
When giving a lecture about the significance of punctuation, the academic professor was interrupted andarrested by the police for murdering his wife, a receptionist of a kindergarten. The police found some photos he deleted from their e-album showing that they used to have a gay life. But, fed up with her wrinkled face, he murdered her instead of divorcing her to avoid fortune division. He cut up a kind of seashell with a sharpened knife, and hammered it into powder on a skateboard, and made at most one gram, which was enough to accelerate one’s pulse until he or she dies. This kind of poison can date back to 10,000 BC when people rubbed it on spears to kill beasts. The professor mixed the poison with onion, watermelon and yogurt for his wife. Howling and scratching her chest, she felt dizzy and died soon.
After tentative examination, the police assumed she died of heart disease. But systematic botanical analyses showed that the watermelon spit on the messy mat and the quilt was poisonous. Regardless of exhaustion and starvation, the acute and skilful policemen used radioactive equipment to make sure the category of the poison. Primitive and not ample as their alternative equipment was, they got perfect accuracy somehow.

People applauded the police and the woman’s family can look ahead with relief now.

(1)选用原文中的词句;
(2)使用原文词句的同义词或相似结构;
(3)使用原文词句的反义词或相反结构;
(4)答案项是对生词、长句或难旬的解释;
(5)答案项是对原文词句或段落的归纳、推理或演绎;
Since the dawn of human ingenuity, people have devised ever more cunning tools to cope with work that is dangerous, boring, burdensome,or just plain nasty. That compulsion has resulted in robotics—the science of conferring various human capabilities on machines. And if scientists have yet to create the mechanical version of science fiction, they have begun to come close.
As a result, the modern world is increasingly populated by intelligent gizmos whose presence we barely notice but whose universal existence has removed much human labor. Our factories hum to the rhythm of robot assembly arms. Our banking is done at automated teller terminals that thank us with mechanical politeness for the transaction. Our subway trains are controlled by tireless robot-drivers.And thanks to the continual miniaturization of electronics and micro-mechanics,there are already robot systems that can perform some kinds of brain and bone surgery with submillimeter accuracy—far greater precision than highly skilled physicians can achieve with their hands alone.
But if robots are to reach the next stage of laborsaving utility, they will have to operate with less human supervision and be able to make at least a few decisions for themselves—goals that pose a real challenge.“While we know how to tell a robot to handle a specific error,”says Dave Lavery, manager of a robotics program at NASA,“we can't yet give a robot enough‘common sense’to reliably interact with a dynamic world.”
Indeed the quest for true artificial intelligence has produced very mixed results. Despite a spell of initial optimism in the 1960s and 1970s when it appeared that transistor circuits and microprocessors might be able to copy the action of the human brain by the year 2010, researchers lately have begun to extend that forecast by decades if not centuries.
What they found,in attempting to model thought,is that the human brain's roughly one hundred billion nerve cells are much more talented—and human perception far more complicated — than previously imagined. They have built robots that can recognize the error of a machine panel by a fraction of a millimeter in a controlled factory environment. But the human mind can glimpse a rapidly changing scene and immediately disregard the 98 percent that is irrelevant, instantaneously focusing on the monkey at the side of a winding forest road or the single suspicious face in a big crowd. The most advanced computer systems on Earth can't approach that kind of ability, and neuroscientists still don't know quite how we do it.
26.Human ingenuity was initially demonstrated in人类的创造性最初表现在
[A]the use of machines to produce science fiction.
[B]the wide use of machines in manufacturing industry.
[C]the invention of tools for difficult and dangerous work.
[D]the elite’s cunning tackling of dangerous and boring work.
27.The word“gizmos" (Line 1,Paragraph2)most probably means
[A]programs.程序。[B]experts.专家。
[C]devices.设备。[D]creatures.
28.According to the text, what is beyond man's ability now is to design a robot that can
[A]fulfill delicate tasks like performing brain surgery.
[B]interact with human beings verbally.
[C]have a little common sense.
[D]respond independently to a changing world.
【分析】根据“超越人类能力”这个关键信息,我们可以定位到第三段中“Dave Lavery”的第二句话,即“we can’t yet give a robot enough‘common sense’to reliably interact with a dynamic world”。
29.Besides reducing human labor, robots can also
[A]make a few decisions for themselves.
[B]deal with some errors with human intervention.
[C]improve factory environments.
[D]cultivate human creativity.
30.The author uses the example of a monkey to argue that robots are
[A]expected to copy human brain in internal structure.
[B]able to perceive abnormalities immediately.
[C]far less able than human brain in focusing on relevant information.
[D]best used in a controlled environment.
A Proposal to myself I am writing this the day before I know my fate-the day before I know the answer to what will happen in my life. I am writing this with my mind set that I will carry on and not let life pass me by. I am determined that I will see the world in every aspect that may be possible for me. I am sure that I will become something, even if the envelope that carries my life inside it gives me bad news. I will not listen to those who insist that a university degree is the only way you will find a means of living these days. I will ignore those who tell me that I am a dreamer without a dream. I will tell myself that although I may not be accepted to college, I've seen the northern lights curtain themselves in front of me. I have tasted the wine in Paris and swum in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. I have been to an Irish pub, and I have watched the sun rise from the Roman Forum. I have climbed the Swiss Alps and counted the stars in the sky until I could see no more . I have experienced what it is like to live, and I will tell myself that even if that envelope is small and exudes rejection, the person that they have rejected will carry on and go on to see more mountains and swim in more waters and keep on counting the stars, because somewhere it is written that I must continue to live my life the way I knows how to. Chasing After Your Dream Dreams! How nice do they sound? I am not talking about the dreams we have when we are asleep but about the life long aspirations in each one of us. I am sure many or rather shoud I say all of us have goals in our lives. It could be the goal to be the next millionaire or to be a popular celebrity. Even if your goal is something small, you should be proud that you do have a goal. Some never tend to think about goals in life. Although this may sound as a surprise it is ture. These people take life as it comes without planning and go with the flow of events in their life. But again there are many who love planning for everything in their life. In fact, having a goal in life would make anyone more focused and determined in reaching that target. Wish to get a job as a web designer? Your dream can come ture if you work on your dream. How, you might ask? Start learning web-designing skills and when you're skilled, you will find that you can get your desired job easily. So, do you see that all it takes for your goals to materialize is some work on your part? I have heard some grumble that their dreas are just dreams and can never become true. Well, it all depends on what kind of goals you're aiming at. If you're dying to be the next star in Hollywood but you're camera-shy and you don't know anything about acting, your dream to make it big in Hollywood might remain as a dream. But if you're very determined to make it and you're already enrolling yourself in agting classes and talking to experiencedacors about acting, you can be pretty sure that you're already half-way there to make your dream into a reality. After all, if one is willing to put in the efforts, their goals can become within reach. So never say that your dream will forever be a dream. Go ahead, plan on making that dream a reality and watch how easily you can attain that target. Good luck. As High As A Kite I was sitting on the beach the other day watching a kite (In the shape of a two winged aircraft) flying high in the sky. It made wonderful acrobatic maneuvers as if piloted by a person with a lifetimes experience of flying. However, we all know a kite cannot fly without the power of the wind. So how real was the performance I was watching? Firstly, it took a person with great imagination to design a kite shaped like a tiger moth aircraft that can encompass the aerodynamics to be powered by the wind. That accomplishment in itself takes great skill and awareness of the forces of nature. Secondly, the person who purchased the kite needs to read the instructions and learn how to apply the winds forces to achieve a great display. The mind and hand coordination requires a mastery to attain the required skills. Thirdly, without the power of the wind, the kite would just be a charming, colorful, textured replica of a Tiger Moth aircraft. We cannot see the wind....but we know it must exist, for we can feel it and see the consequences of its power. So, we have a relationship between the designer and manufacturer which ultimately will connect to the user. It then needs a power of nature that cannot be seen in order to allow the kite to operate. The display I was observing had a lot of behind the scenes work that needed to be performed, before the show could go on.

It is often necessary to release a fish, that is , set it free after catching, because it is too small, or you just don’t want to take it home to eat. In some cases, releasing fish is a good measure that will help keep fish variety and build their population size. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) encourages fishermen who practice catch-and-release fishing to use a few simple skills when doing so. The advice provided below will help make sure that the fish you release will survive (存活) to bite again another day.
—When catching a fish, play it quickly and keep the fish in the water as much as possible. Don’t use a net in landing the fish and release it quickly to prevent it from dying.
—Hold the fish gently. Do not put your fingers in its eyes. Don’t wipe the scales (鱼鳞) off the fish because it might cause it to develop a disease and reduce its chance of survival.
—Remove your hook (鱼钩) quickly. If the hook is too deep or hooked in the stomach, cut the line and leave the hook in. The hook left inside will cause no serious problem to the fish. —Take good care of the fish by moving it gently in water . Release the fish when it begins to struggle and is able to swim.
—Do not hold fish in a bucket or some other containers and later decide to release it. If you are going to release a fish, do so right away.
With a little care and by following the suggestions given above, you can give the released fish a better chance of survival.

I believe that my country, Poland, is a perfect example for a place where food is particularly important. When we were little children, we began to understand how much a loaf of bread meant to our parents—to some it might sound silly but for me the custom of kissing bread before you started cutting it was simply amazing. It's not so common nowadays to treat food that way, since you hardly ever bake your own bread. Besides, everyone would call you crazy if you tried to kiss every bread roll before you ate them! But though we no longer make our food from scratch (起点), some customs have been kept--that's why I feel so sorry every time I have to throw any food away—even though I no longer live with my parents and nobody would blame me for this anymore!
Many people of our nation are still working as farmers, eating what they grow and harvest and therefore enjoying everything more. It's widely known that you value more anything that needs your effort in the first place. In most homes in Poland, especially those of farmers, the whole family would try and have their meals together--extremely difficult now, but so rewarding (值得) ! You can share other members' troubles and successes, give your children some attention, or just sit down for a moment instead of rushing through life aimlessly. Furthermore, your body, and stomach in particular will be very grateful (感激) for such a time!
In Poland, a wedding, Christmas or even a birthday is celebrated with a great meal. Women in the house get together and cook, sometimes for a few days before the event, and the extremely good or unusual food will be remembered and widely talked about.
You cannot over-value the importance of food in the country. What's more, almost everyone in Poland will be as interested in the topic as I am.

A. most meals can be interesting topics for a long time
B. the whole family often have meals together nowadays
C. it's common for women to get together to cook for a few days

For those who study the development of intelligence (智力) in the animal world,self-awareness is an important measurement. An animal that is aware (意识) of itself has a high level of intelligence.
Awareness can be tested by studying whether the animal recognizes itself in the mirror, that is, its own reflected image Many animals fail this exercise bitterly, paying very little attention to the reflected image. Only humans, and some intelligent animals like apes and dolphins, have been shown to recognize that the image in the mirror is of themselves.
Now another animal has joined the club. In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers report that an Asian elephant has passed the mirror self-reflection test.
“We thought that elephants were the next important animal,”said Diana Reiss of the Wildlife Conservation Society, an author of the study with Joshua M. Plotnik and Fans B. M. de Waal of Emory University. With their large brains,Reiss said, elephants “seemed like cousins to apes and dolphins.”
The researchers tested Happy. Maxine and Patty, three elephants at the Bronx Zoo. They put an 8-foot-square mirror on a wall of the animals' play area (out of the sight of zoo visitors) and recorded what happened with cameras, including one built in the mirror.
The elephants used their long noses to find what was behind it,and to examine parts of their bodies.
Of the three, Happy then passed the test,in which a clear mark was painted on one side of her face. She could tell the mark was there by looking in the mirror, and she used the mirror to touch the mark with her long nose.
Diana Reiss said,“We knew elephants were intelligent, but now we can talk about their intelligence in a better way.”
