And it is as dark as night. The female(雌性) angler knows a good way to catch food. She goes fishing! She has her own fishing line. It grows out the top of her head. It hangs down in front of her mouth. The tip of her line looks bright in the dark water. The tip of her line is her bait(鱼饵). Hungry fish see her bait. They think it is food to eat. A hungry fish will swim closer and closer. It swims right at the bait. Then the angler closes her mouth. Snap! That’s the end of that fish. The female angler grows quite large. She may be longer than your arm. But the male is very small. He is about as long as a finger. Soon after he is born, the male fish starts to look for female. When he finds her, he holds onto her side with mouth. Soon his mouth grows into her side. Now he will not get lost in the dark. The male angler has no fishing line. He does not need one. The female does the fishing for him. And he gets his food through her. The angler is just one of the strange fish in the sea. There are many more. Some fish are round like balls. C We have known for a long time that flowers of different plants open and close at different time of day. Yet no one really understands why flowers open and close like this at particular times. It is not as simple as we might think, as new experiments have shown. In one experiment, flowers were kept in darkness. We might expect that the flowers, without any rmation about the time of the day, did not open as they usually do. In fact, they continued to open at their usual time. This shows that they have some mysterious 神秘的 way of knowing the time. Their sense of time does not depend on rmation from the outside world; it is, so to speak, inside them, a kind of “inner clock”. This discovery may not seem to be very important. However, it was later found that not just plants but also animals including man have this “inner clock”which controls working of their bodies and their activities. Human beings, then, are also controlled by this mysterious power. Whether we wish it or not, it affects such things in our life as our need for sleep, our need for food. However, I didn’t know how different between textbook English and everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut. When I first studied English, I was told to say, “I am fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good.” or “I am tired.” One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused困惑的. However, in China, girls try every possib le way to get their skin paler, or “whiter.” I also surprised by how hard-working. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music. The kids here are so talented, I feel sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports. 31. If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers. Today, many teenagers are overweight, and some of this because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love food with a lot of fat, oil, salt, and sugar. People often call this kind of food “junk food”.
But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers eat unhealthily. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent survey at one school, scientists found that over two thirds of the students didn’t follow a healthy diet. They didn’t like vegetables, and many of them didn’t like fruits. They preferred to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar, or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children’s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:

There’s a small brick house I visit from time 进入查看:2022-2023学年英语周报九年级第4期答案及试题(初三第四期) There’s a small brick house I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special, but rather the person who lives inside. I met Miss C about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. Miss C created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be in that moment. My parents reassured (安抚) me I could start school when I was 4. Though, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss C to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I marveled at (对……感到惊奇) how she connected with children. For years, Miss C volunteered in my classroom. Over the years we have shared in each other’s ups and downs. She asks me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers. I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement. We go through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids (教具).
A tiny clue found in ancient deposits A tiny clue found in ancient deposits(地质沉积物) has unlocked big secrets about Greenland's past and future climate. Just beyond the northwest edge of the vast Greenland Ice Sheet, researchers have discovered lake mud that have survived the last ice age. The mud and remains of common flies in it record two inter glacial periods (间冰期) in northwest Greenland. Although researchers have long known these two periods 一 the early Holocene and Last Inter glacial 一 experienced warming in the Arctic, the mix of fly species shows that Greenland was even warmer than previously thought. "As far as we know, it has never been found in Greenland. We think this is the first time anyone has reported it in ancient deposits or modern lakes there," Axford said."We were really surprised to see how far north it migrated (迁徙)." This new information could help researchers better measure Greenland's sensitivity to warming, by testing and improving models of climate and ice sheet models could then improve predictions of how Greenland's ice sheet might respond to man- made global warming. After all, Greenland covers 80per cent of the Arctic country and holds enough ice to equal 20 feet of global sea level."Northwest Greenland might feel really remote, but what happens to that ice sheet is going to matter to everyone in every coastal city around the world,”said Yarrow Axford, an associate professor in the team."One of the big uncertainties in climate science is how fast the Earth changes when it gets warmer. Geology gives us an opportunity to see what happened when the Earth was warmer than today." said Axford.
For many of us, there's nothing better For many of us, there's nothing better than burying our head in a good book. Whether it's a story or a biography, it's good to read a book to switch off from the distinctions(分心)of everyday life. . It may seem obvious that reading is beneficial to our health. It can be educational and broaden the mind. A good novel can make us happy, or make us cry as we sympathize with characters. This power of reading books was first recognized a few years ago by the British charity Reading Agency, who published a list of books that doctors could offer to patients, treating topics from depression to dementia(痴呆)and to some pain. Professor Philip Davis, author of a book called Reading for lif e, studies people in reading groups and found that it's reading literature(only written work thought to have artistic value) that has the best effect. When reading something for pleasure, he said ”...・the brain begins to work from different parts, and it gets excited, it gets pre — emotional. ."
