1987年，“美国黑人状况”称在北方各州黑人的失业情况：“在诸如底特律、布法罗、芝加哥及克里弗兰等城市，在劳动市场上，黑人，尤其是黑人男性──同白人相比其收入差距可能超过了南方种族歧视最为严重的城市里的最高记录。”
