Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension (40 minutes)
Section A
Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.
Questions 26 to 35 are based on the following passage.
“Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated." Those were the words uttered by pioneering British scientist Rosalind Franklin, who firmly believed that the pursuit of science should be (26) to all.
As a woman working in the first half of the 20th century, Franklin’.s contributions to some of the greatest scientific discoveries of our time - including the structure of DNA - were sadly
(27) in her lifetime. One of my proudest moments in my role as universities and science minister was being able to go some way to redress this injustice last month, by unveiling the new Mars rover named after this brilliant British scientist.
Today, on International Women’ s Day, it is only right that we recognize the important work of female scientists like Franklin and seek to honour her memory by inspiring more women and girls to follow in her footsteps.
More than 60 years after Franklin’ s death, we are (28) living in a different world, where women play an important part in every echelon of our society-not least in science, innovation, higher education and research.
UK universities are world leaders when it comes to advancing and (29) gender equality. The Athena SWAN charter, initially established to improve the representation of women in scientific disciplines in higher education, now has 145 members. It has also expanded to promote gender equality in multiple disciplines-including the arts, social sciences, humanities, business and law.
In the past decade, we have seen a (30) increase in England in the number of women accepted on to full-time undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem subjects). And in the last academic year, women (31) for more than half of all Stem postgraduates at UK universities. The government is taking further steps to improve women’ s representation in science and has today awarded nine inspiring women £50,000 to develop inventions to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities we face as a society. From new materials to cut down on plastics pollution to special devices to improve posture and comfort for wheelchair users, these women are at the forefront of creating the new technology for tomorrow.
This is significant progress, but access to higher education is only half of the equation. To have real equality in the sector, we need to ensure talented women are able to progress into the academic and leadership roles they desire, and get the remuneration they deserve.
Data shows us the (32) to success gets harder for women to climb the further up they go.
Although women make up the majority of undergraduates in our universities, just under half of academic staff are female. At (33) levels, only a quarter of professors are women, and black women make up less than 2% of all female academic staff.
I welcome the introduction of pro-active strategies like the new initiative at the University of
Leicester, which I am visiting today, to increase the number of female professors by each year, with the overall goal of having 30% professorships held by women by 2020.
There are also stark differences in pay across grades. The gender pay gap based on median salaries across the sector in 2016-17 was , (34) there is still some way to go to ensure women are rising through the ranks to higher grade positions and being paid (35) .

To create means “to bring into being, to cause to exist”—something each of us does daily. We are creative whenever we look at or think about something in a new way. First this involves an awareness of our surroundings. It means using all of our sese to bee aware of our world. This may be as simple as being aware of color and texture, as well as taste, when we plan a meal. Above all, it is the ability to notice things that others might miss. A second part of creativity is an ability to see relationships among things. I f we believe the expression, “There is nothing new under the sun,” the creativ ity is remaking or rebining the old in new ways. For example, we might do this by finding a more effective way to study or a better way to arrange our furniture, or we might make a new bination of camera lenses and filters to cr eate an unusual photograph. A third part of creativity is the courage and drive to make use of our new ide as, to apply them to achieve some new results. To think up a new concept is one thing; to put the idea to work is another. These three parts of creativity are involved in all the great works of genius, but they are also involved in many of our day to day activities. of the following activities is NOT a creative one according to t he passage? prepare a meal. arrange the furniture in a peculiar way. buy some books from a bookstore. “write” a letter with the puter. author holds that ____. is of highly demand is connected with a deep insight to some extent is to create something new and concrete practise and practise is the only way to cultivate one’s creativity 28.“There is nothing new under the sun.” ****** really implies that ____. can seldom create new things new thing is only a tale new thing can only be created at the basis of original things can scarcely see really new things in the world does the author think about the relationship between a new though t and its being put into practice? ’s more difficult to create a new thought than to apply it in practice. find a new thought will definitely lead to the production of a new thing. may e up with a new thought, but can not put it into practice. man with an excellent ability of practice can easily bee an inventor. best title for this passage is ____. to Cultivate One’s Creativity is Creativity Importance of Creativity —a Not Farway Thing 大学四级考试阅读训练题***二*** When I was studying at Yale, some phenomena puzzled me greatly. Therefore, students always expect the professor to give an answer to th e question. I still remember how frustrated they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than that of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they w ere sure about it. Education in China is valued for united thinking. Writing
Write proposals for the service of school hospital
范文:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing great. I am Li Ming, a sophomore majoring in English Language education. I am writing to make suggestions on making an application for improving our school clinic' s services.
The first feature of the application is a website that enables students to express their dissatisfaction about the doctors attitude. Due to the large number of patients, it is quite easy for students to encounter the doctor' s impatience, which leads to mental discomfort in the process of seeing a doctor. Moreover, booking a doctor in advance is another useful aspect of this application. With the help of this feature, students can avoid wasting time waiting for the call of doctors, because they need to arrive in the clinic at the time they booked before.
Thank you for your consideration and I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards,
Li Ming

The first study to pare honesty across a range of munication media has fund that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in emails. The fact that emails are automatically recorded—and can e back to haunt ***困扰*** you—appears to be the key to the finding. Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, asked 30 students to keep a munications diary for a week. In it they noted the number of conversations or email exchanges they had lasting more than 10 minutes, and confessed to how many lies they told. Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14 per cent of emails, 21 per cent of instant messages, 27 per cent of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37 per cent of phone calls. His results to be presented at the conference on human-puter interaction in Vienna, Austria, in April, have surprised psychologists. Some expected emailers to be the biggest liars, reasoning that because deception makes people unfortable, the detachment ***非直接接触*** of emailing would make it easier to lie. Others expected people to lie more in face-to-face exchanges because we are most practised at that form of munication. But Hancock says it is also crucial whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time. People appear to be afraid to lie when they know the munication could later be used to hold them to account, he says. This is why fewer lies appear in email than on the phone. People are also more likely to lie in real time—in a instant message or phone call, say—than if they have time to think of a response, says Hancock. He found many lies are spontaneous ***脱口而出的*** responses to an unexpected demand, such as: “Do you like my dress?” Hancock hopes his research will help panies work our the best ways for their employees to municate. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious ***有营养的*** foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier. The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely “not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body’s special needs. Both types have simply been called “well.” In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellness” only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a point of monitoring their body’s condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap ***缺陷*** may be “well,” in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. “Wellness” may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life. 62. Today medical care is placing more stress on ________. A*** keeping people in a healthy physical condition B*** monitoring patients’ body functions C*** removing people’s bad living habits D*** ensuring people’s psychological well-being 63. Traditionally, a person is considered “well” if he ________. A*** does not have any unhealthy living habits B*** does not have any physical handicaps C*** is able to handle his daily routines D*** is free from any kind of disease 65. According to the author, the true meaning of “wellness” is for people ________. A*** to best satisfy their body’s special needs B*** to strive to maintain the best possible health C*** to meet the strictest standards of bodily health D*** to keep a proper balance between work and leisure 66. According to what the author advocates, which of the following groups of people would be considered healthy? A*** People who have strong muscles as well as slim figures. One lingui stic***语言的*** feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal***情态的*** verbs—far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said, “This is my personal opinion and it could be wrong.” or “You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.” In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct di rections. I remember American teachers who taught in our university plaining about the fact that Chinese students u niformly expressed the same idea in their English position. The examinations in America usually do not test a student’s ability to memorize the material but his ability to *** yze and solve problems. Education in America is valued not on ly as a means to obtain employment but as a process of enhancing critical thinking. the USA, when the students are in class, ____. Chinese student tends to be very active American student likes to make trouble Chinese student likes to puzzle the teacher American student tends to be vigorous teacher in the USA prefers to ____ when he answers questions. very sincere very direct very self confident very indifferent is the opinion of the author concerning the difference of teachin g methods between China and the USA? thinks that Chinese teaching metods can make students learn more. holds that the major purpose of Chinese teaching methods is to impro ve students’ remembrance. thinks that American teaching is ability oriented. holds that American teachers hate to give a test. author thinks that the relationship between the student and the te acher is ____. intimate in China in China in USA harmonious in USA education in USA may produce some ____ graduates. 32.答案A。

提交给,commit…to…
解析:insist on...
解析:may as well还是……
Is it advisable to stay here?
解析:prefer后接两个不定式相比较时,只能用rather than, rather than 后跟不带to的不定式。
解析:not...until...
解析:as much...as ... This is as much our responsibility as yours.
15. A. In the classroom. B. At he post office. C. In the bank. D. In a park. 16. A. The woman is excited to have lunch with the man. B. The woman has appointment with someone else. C. The woman thinks the man did wrong in the morning. D. The woman is afraid that the man has lunch alone. 15. W: I want to send this package by first class mail. I'dalso like some stamps. M: Do you want the mail insured? Q: Where are the two speakers? 16. M: I thought that maybe we could go there for lunch today. That is, if you haven't promised togo with someone else. W: That'd be wonderful, Joe. But I hope you're in a better mood than you were this morning. Q: What does the woman mean? “中but”题。女士的话That'd bewonderful... Section C pound Dictation Corporations as a group offer a variety of jobs. Conversation One 19. A. A hair wash. B. A nail trim. C. A massage. D. A shave. 20. A. He didn't have a clear idea of the plete service. B. He wanted the best service. D. He just wanted his hair cut the way he likes. D. He wanted his hair to be trimmed quickly. 21. A. Your hands look good. B. Your hair is in good condition. C. You have a good beautician to serve you. D. You can relax. 22. A. He is going to a business convention in town. B. He is going to meet his clients. C. He is going to deal with workplace accidents. D. He is going to be interviewed for new employment. Now you'll hear the two long conversations. Conversation One W: Hi. How can we help you today? M: Yeah. I'd like to get my hair trimmed a little. Nothing fancy. Just a basic trim. W: Well, can we interest you in today's special? M: Um... No... W: [19]We'll shampoo, cut, and style your hair for one unbelievable low price of $. Plus, we'll give you a clean shave and a back massage to help you relax. Best service in town! M: Okay, [20]I'll have the plete service today, but as I said before, I just want to get my hair trimmed. A little off the top and sides. That's all. I mean, that's all. W: No problem. Relax. [21]You're in good hands. Okay, here we go. So, what do you do for a living? M: I'm a lawyer, specializing in workplace accidents, and [22]I'm in town for an interview for a new job, and... Hey, what happened to my hair? And what's left of my hair turned purple. Are you even a licensed beautician? W: Well, sir. We offer a money-back guarantee on all our work, so if you're not pletely satisfied... M: Satisfied? I'm anything but satisfied. [22]How in the world am I supposed to go to a job interview looking like this? Forget it. Forget it. Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 19. What is one service NOT included in the special price at the beauty salon? B。 20. Why does the man repeatedly say "That's all"? 根据男士说的“Okay, I'll have the plete service today”,可排除A甚至D全套服务所需的长时间与quickly矛盾;B无依据。 21. What does the beautician mean by "You're in good hands"? 本题问“You're in good hands”是什么意思 。 22. Why does the customer go to this beauty salon to improve his appearance? 四个选项均以“He is going to”开头,差别在to后面的内容上。

Kind regards,
Li Ming

Writing
Write proposals for the service of StudentsUnionl/The Federa-tion of Students
Dear President,
I hope you are doing great!l am Li Ming, one of the sophomore students in our saw that our Student Union posted a notice collecting advice about enriching extracurricular activ-ities, soI am writing this letter to make some suggestions.
First, could you organize more sports activities? Now, there is only one annual school-wide sports meet, and I believe both the variety and the frequency of such events can be increased. Second, it might be a good idea for our students to engage in more social activities which can broaden their horizons and im-prove their sense of responsibilities. The Student Union can re-cruit volunteers to aid rural Project Hope primary schools,go to nursing homes to visit elderly people, and raise funds to help disadvantaged , I suggest that more distin-guished experts and scholars in distinct fields be invited to de-liver speeches to our year, the Student Union or-ganized a couple of forums and lectures, which received wide acclaim from both students and teachers in our school.
Thank you for your time, and I believe our Student Union will play in bigger role in enriching our students'mind by organiz-ing colorful and diversified extracurricular activities.
Warm regards,
Li Ming

Once upon a time, a man, who kept a flock of sheep, was ready to herd them when he noticed one of them was gone. Observing carefully, he saw a hole in the sheepfold. Obvi ously, a wolf must have got in and taken the sheep away. His neighbour advised him to fix the sheepfold, but he wouldn, t listen only to find the next day that another sheep was carried away by the wolf. Remembering his neig- hour, s words, he hurried to repair the sheepfold by plug ging the hole. Since then, no sheep was missing in this way ever again.
The story tells us: if we solve the problem in time, we can prevent ourselves from suffering bigger loss.
