Text 10
W: Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Then maybe this is for you. When you worry about getting to sleep and keep tossing and turning around, trying to find a comfortable position, you’re probably only making matters worse. What happens when you do that is that your heart rate actually increases, making it more difficult to relax.
You may also have some bad habits that contribute to the problem. Do you often rest during the day? Do you get very little exercise, or do you exercise a lot late in the day? Have you already got enough sleep, or do you sleep late on weekends? Any or all of these might be leading to your sleeplessness influencing your body’s natural clock. What should you do, then, on those sleepless nights? Don’t bother with sleeping pills. They can actually make it worse later. The best thing to do is to drink milk or eat cheese. These are all rich in a kind of acid and help produce a chemical in the brain that controls sleep. That will help you relax, and you’ll be on your way to getting a good night’s sleep. Until tomorrow’s broadcast, this has been another in the series Tips for Good Health.

W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to our program. Today, we are fortunate to have a special guest with us. Some of you may have heard of him before. He’s an artist. His works have received many prizes and have been shown in over one hundred exhibitions across the country — Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, to name just a few. His name is Chris Cucksy. So Chris, tell us a bit about yourself.
M: Well, I was born in Springfield, Missouri, and grew up in Kansas. I didn’t come from a family with wealth or position, but I did manage to get a master’s degree in fine arts.
W: When did you first start to make art? And what was the turning point in your life that made you an artist?
M: I always liked drawing as early as I can remember, so right from then, I knew what I was going to be: an artist.
W: What is it that always inspires you to create?
M: Nature is the biggest inspiration. I’m always inspired by things of beauty and harmony.
Text 9
M: You must be pretty excited about your trip to Europe, Dorothy. When are you leaving?
W: In just two weeks, and I am excited. I’ve been looking forward to this training program for a long time. But there are still a few things I need to do before I go.
M: Like what?
W: Like renewing my passport and figuring out what to do with my apartment while I’m gone.
M: You are not going to give it up, are you?
W: No way! I’ll never find another apartment like it around here. But I don’t like the idea of paying three months for an empty apartment, either. So, I’m looking for someone to take it while I’m away.
M: Um, let me think. Oh, I know just a person. An old colleague of mine, Jim Thomas. He is coming here to do some research this summer, from June to August.
W: Well, that’s exactly when I’ll be away!
M: Tell you what: I’ll be calling Jim late this week anyway, so I’ll mention it to him.
W: Well, thanks, Bill.
Text 10
W: I hope I’ve given you a clear idea of the schedule for your London weekend. And, before I finish, let me just give you some advice which should make your stay more enjoyable. Firstly, please do remember to put on some comfortable shoes. London is a big place, and whatever you do, you’ll find yourself doing quite a lot of walking. So, comfortable shoes are really necessary. And secondly, let me ask you to please look after your money. Keep it safe at all times, and then you will not have any unpleasant accident, which could ruin your whole weekend. You’ll find a copy of your weekend’s schedule in your room. Take a look at it, and make sure you’re clear about everything. Well, that’s all from me for now. Go and leave your luggage in your rooms. I’ll be seeing you here again in fifteen minutes. Goodbye for now!
M:Excuse you mind if I use your phone?W:Help 's on the table over there.问题:What does the woman mean? man should help man may use the phone答案:B我想知道为什么不选A。

she thought I had said the main entrance in the front when I
really said the east entrance.
M: Well, did you ever get together?

and had gone inside to the women's clothing department. She

and must finish the primary and junior school. It's the law.
W: Yes, I know this quite well. But still there are some children
who can't go to school because of their poverty.
M: Yes, it’s a matter of money. You see, education here is not
completely free for the students. If it were so it would cost
the government too much money.
W: Do all parents send their children to state schools?
M: Yes, nearly all of them. If you are rich, you may prefer to
send your children to private schools, but it takes a lot of
money.

Until finally I stopped and said, “Where is that lively college girl who used to read tens of books and do fun things? Where is she?” I knew I have to look for her. Then one day, walking through a children’s bookstore, it hit me. I loved these books, the richness of the pictures, and the power of these words. I gathered an armful of books and said, “This is what I want to do.” And since then, I have treated writing like a full time job. I wrote over twenty stories in the next year. And most of them got sent back with letters saying they were not good enough. But I didn’t give up. I think it’s because of that love that I have been able not to just write one book but nine books in the last ten years. When I worked in the company, I worked sixty-hour weeks because I had to. Now I work sixty-hour weeks because I love it. If I hadn't made that choice to take a chance to do something that really spoke to me. I don’t think I could have lived with myself.

China is a big country with a long history, and it also has many taboos(禁忌).Spring Festival is the most important festival in China, but there are a lot of taboos during this festival. You can't say "death", because it is not polite. You'd better wear red and don't wear white. "Red" stands for happiness. The married women should stay at their mother-in-law's until the 2nd day of the lunar New Year. Normally, the whole family will gather together during the festival and talk with each other happily. The children will get a red envelope with money in it. At dinner, the young can't start eating until the oldest or the most respected begin to eat. We can't send umbrellas to a newly married couple, because it means separation. We can't cut a pear for the same reason.

The secretary told me that Mr. Abel wanted to see me. I felt very nervous when I entered his office. He did not look up from his desk when I came in. I stood in front of his desk for a few minutes before he looked up at me with a smile. My heart was beating fast, for I seldom saw him smiling like that. After he asked me to be seated, he said that business was not very good. He told me that the company could not afford all the salaries and twenty people had left. I knew my turn had come. "I was trying my best to do my job, Mr. Abel," I said in a weak voice. "Don't interrupt," he said. "After discussing this with other managers, I have decided to add $ 50 to your salary monthly.”Then I realized why Mr. Abel had smiled like that.
