第一步,应该找到雄性不育的植株,培育出水稻雄性不育系。其特点是雄蕊退化,而雌蕊则是正常的,即通常说的“母禾”。

第二步,再找一种特殊的水稻品种作父本,给母禾授粉,使它养育出来的后代,全部保持雄性不育的特性,这就是保持系。有了保持系,不育系才能代代相传并大量繁殖。

第三步,还要找一种稻种和雄性不育系杂交,使杂交的后代恢复生育能力,这叫恢复系。有了恢复系,就可以大量生产杂交种子了。

袁隆平提出的通过“三系”来利用水稻杂种优势的设想与当时学术界流行的观点大相径庭。他披挂上阵,尚未站稳脚跟,冷言冷语便扑面而来。但袁隆平既不争,也不辩,仍然矢志不移地搞他的科学试验。

1964年袁隆平迈出了杂交水稻研究的第一步。可是不久,“”便开始了。

自新中国成立以来,我国共育成水稻品种五百多个;然而,没有哪个良种像杂交水稻推广得这么快,效果这么好。1976年全国种植杂交水稻二百零八万亩,到就增到近两亿亩。十三年来,杂交水稻累计种植面积十二点五六亿亩,增产粮食约一千亿公斤,增收近三百亿元。根据农业部统计,全国水稻平均亩产三百五十七公斤,而杂交水稻是四百四十一公斤,每亩增产八十四公斤。
