Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.

Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”— the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument(纪念碑) and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.

Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil’ s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(沙雕) stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

The Erie Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US. It crossed New York from Buffalo on Lake Erie Troy to Albany on the Hudson River. It joined the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The canal served as a route over which industrial goods could flow into the west, and materials could pour into the east. The Erie Canal helped New York develop into the nation’s largest city.

The building of the canal was paid for entirely by the state of New York. It cost $ 7 143 789, but it soon gained its price many times over. Between 1825, when the canal was opened, and 1882, when toll charges(过运河费) were stopped, the state collected $121 461 891.

For a hundred years before the Erie was built, people had been talking about a canal which could join the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man who planned the Erie Canal and carried the plan through was De Witt Clinton. Those who were against the canal laughingly called it “Clinton’s Ditch(沟)”. Clinton talked and wrote about the canal and drew up plans for it. He and Governor Morris went to Washington in 1812 to ask for help for the canal, but they were unsuccessful.

Clinton became governor of New York in 1817, and shortly afterwards, on July 4, 1817, broke ground for the canal in Rome, . The first part of the canal was completed in 1820. As the canal grew, towns along its course developed fast. The length of the canal is 363 miles.

Ever since news of widespread food recalls caused by a carcinogenic dye broke, there has been confusion over possible links to the country of the same name, but Sudan officials say there is no connection whatever.

Sudan?1 is a red industrial dye that has been found in some chilli powder, but was banned in food products across the European Union (EU) in July 2003.

Since the ban was put in place, EU officials have been striving to remove some food products from the shelves. So far 580 products have been recalled.

Last week Sudan‘s Embassy in the United Kingdom asked the Food Standards Agency (FSA) for clarification of the origin of the dye‘s name.

The FSA, an independent food security watchdog in Britain, received a letter from the Sudanese embassy last week.

"They asked us why the dye is named Sudan, however, we also do not know how it got the name," she said. "People found the dye in 1883 and gave it the name. Nobody knows the reason, and we cannot give any explanation before we find out."

In East Africa there is a bribe(部落) of people called the Masai. They are tall and slim(苗条的) and carry long spears to guard their cattle against an attacking lion or leopard(豹). These Africans move from place to place on the rolling(绵延起伏的) grasslands looking for suitable grazing(牧场) and water. Mboto is twelve years old. He helps his father drive the cattle. If the family decides to remain in one spot for a while, he helps gather sticks and thin branches to build a simple house. The sticks are placed in the ground in a circle. They are then bent inwards and joined at the top. Small branches and leaves fill the spaces. If it looks as if the family will stay longer than usual, then the inside walls are often plastered with cattle manure(粪). For a door there is only a small opening to allow a person to enter. A thorn(刺) fence is built around the small house to keep cattle safe at night. Lions, leopards and hyenas prowl(觅食) around after dark. So the cattle would be easily killed and eaten.

When Mboto grows up into a man, he will become a true Masai warrior(勇士). He will have to join other warriors in the strange custom of drinking blood. The blood is taken from the neck of one of their cattle. It is mixed with milk and together with meat. It becomes the main food for the men.

Photos that you might have found down the back of your sofa are now big business!

In 2005, the American artist Richard Prince’s photograph of a photograph, Untitled (Cowboy), was sold for $ 1, 248, 000.

Prince is certainly not the only contemporary artist to have worked with so-called “found photographs”—a loose term given to everything from discarded(丢弃的) prints discovered in a junk shop to old advertisements or amateur photographs from a stranger’s family album. The German artist Joachim Schmid, who believes “basically everything is worth looking at”, has gathered discarded photographs, postcards and newspaper images since 1982. In his on-going project, Archiv, he groups photographs of family life according to themes: people with dogs; teams; new cars; dinner with the family; and so on.

Like Schmid, the editors of several self-published art magazines also champion (捍卫) found photographs. One of them, called simply Found, was born one snowy night in Chicago, when Davy Rothbard returned to his car to find under his wiper(雨刷) an angry note intended for some else: “Why’s your car HERE at HER place?” The note became the starting point for Rothbard’s addictive publication, which features found photographs sent in by readers, such a poster discovered in our drawer.

The whole found-photograph phenomenon has raised some questions. Perhaps one of the most difficult is: can these images really be considered as art? And if so, whose art? Yet found photographs produced by artists, such Richard Prince, may riding his horse hurriedly to meet someone? Or how did Prince create this photograph? It’s anyone’s guess. In addition, as we imagine the back-story to the people in the found photographs artists, like Schmid, have collated (整理), we also turn toward our own photographic albums. Why is memory so important to us? Why do we all seek to freeze in time the faces of our children, our parents, our lovers, and ourselves? Will they mean anything to anyone after we’ve gone?

64. The first paragraph of the passage is used to _________.

A. remind readers of found photographs

B. advise reader to start a new kind of business

C. ask readers to find photographs behind sofa

D. show readers the value of found photographs

65. According to the passage, Joachim Schmid _________.

A. is fond of collecting family life photographs

B. found a complaining not under his car wiper

C. is working for several self-published magazines

D. wondered at the artistic nature of found photographs

66. The underlined word “them” in Para 4 refers to __________.

A. the readers

B. the editors

C. the found photographs

D. the self-published magazines

67. By asking a series of questions in Para 5, the author mainly intends to indicate that ________.

A. memory of the past is very important to people

B. found photographs allow people to think freely

C. the back-story of found photographs is puzzling

D. the real value of found photographs is questionable

68. The author’s attitude towards found photographs can be described as _________.

A. critical B. doubtful C. optimistic D. satisfied

The car had broken down, and to make matters worse,it was beginning to rain.(车子坏了,更糟糕的是,天开始下起雨来。) 2:B.答语为“No”说明我父亲现在已经不是老师了,这样符合时态现在时应用-is-; since在it is/has been/was/had been……since(that)+从句句型中用法意思见下:since做连词引导时间状语从句,since在从句中,不论用短暂动词(即非延续性动词eg:go、leave、come等)还是延续动词(eg:live、smoke等)及其动词的过去式,通常都表示动作或状态的完成或结束时算起,因此这种since从句应理解为:“自从该动作结束以来”示例:1)短暂动词(短暂动词不延续,所以动作发生可理解为行为结束)-a:It is/hasbeen two years since we left left school. (距 left school发生即这个行为结束已有两年)-b:It was two years since his wife had died. (work为延续性动词,故句意为在这里工作结束即不在此地工作已有五年)-b:It is five years since he smoked. 多表状态即具有延续性,故应理解为is not a teacher已有5年)VS比较1):-It is 3 years since I lived hear. -It is 3 years since I came to live here. (came to live here不同于lived hear,前者为短暂动词短语不延续,后者为延续性动词) 2):-It is 3 years since he drank. -It is 3 years since he began to drink. It is 5 years since he became a teacher. became a teacher短暂。3:B. All flights having been canceled=Because all flights have been cancled,we decided to take a ):Weather permitting=If weather permits,we will go for a picnic.(Weather与permits是主谓关系,故省略时谓语动词permit用表主动意义的现在分词形式permitting.)-c):All homework (having been) finished=After all homework (has been)/was finished, xiaoming began to watch TV.(homework与finish是动宾关系,所以省略时谓语动词was finished用表示被动意义的过去分词finish,可直接去掉was.若用has been finished则省略时用having been . The fish _____ bad=Beacuse the fish ____bad, the children left much of it untouched. 所以原题中fish tastes bad 而非fish is tasted bad.故应为The fish tasting bad.示例:1-The materia is felt nice.(错) The materia feels nice.(对) 2-Flovers of the garden smelling so nice, the garden attracts many tourists.=Because flovers of the garden smells so nice……5:对。 every his children =each his children=each of his children.

例如,考查定语从句的知识点,大家要注意,首先在主句中找到先行词,然后再把先行词带入从句当中,看看它在从句中的作用,如果是作主语、宾语或表语,就要用that(表人或物),which(只表物),who(只表人),whom(只表人,且只能作宾语或表语)等;如果作状语,就用when(表时间),where(表地点),why(表原因)等。

A. critical B. doubtful C. optimistic D. satisfied
