一次，安徒生想起自己过去一段失败的爱情经历，想起《亚格涅格》这部小说的女主人公的遭遇，她在龙宫里度过了多年，后来扔下丈夫龙王和6个幼女，回到了人间。她的几个女儿怎样呢？
安徒生的脑海里又浮现出一个个画面。6个小人鱼由祖母教养，正在成长中，6个小人鱼都那么美丽，而那个最小的是最美丽的。她的皮肤又光又嫩，像玫瑰的花瓣，她的眼睛是蔚蓝色的，像晶莹的湖水。她把自己的花坛布置成圆形，像一轮太阳似的。她最愉快的事情是听人讲人世间的故事，对此她充满了美好的幻想。

In a narrow creek she found a whole troop of little human children, quite naked, and sporting about in the water; she wanted to play with them, but they fled in a great fright; and then a little black animal came to the water; it was a dog, but she did not know that, for she had never before seen one. This animal barked at her so terribly that she became frightened, and rushed back to the open sea.
